In the fall, Saturdays are Game Days in Athens and the first home game is a major event for many Athenians and Georgia Bulldog fans. Downtown Athens transforms into a sea of red and black tailgate tents and fans of all shapes and sizes decked out in their best Georgia gear. Dedicated fans set up their tailgate spots the night before the game or early in the morning the day of the game because spots are first come, first served. Some groups and families have been in the same spot for decades. Tailgating brings friends and families together, whether or not they are diehard football fans! They come to enjoy a beautiful day in Athens, share great food, and spend time with friends.
For MBA students, these tailgates are part of the Georgia MBA experience. Our spot is in the Davis Courtyard outside Correll Hall, which is prime real estate for walking to the stadium and watching the crowd stream by the building. For the uninitiated, game days can be a little overwhelming until they get into the spirit of the day: enjoy time with friends and celebrate being part of the UGA community. If you don’t like football, come for the food and socializing! The Terry College also holds a Homecoming Tailgate each October for students, staff, and alumni to bring the whole community together.
If you want to gain a better understanding of tailgating and football culture, listen to the Football 101 episode of the Dawgs on Top podcast or the Waitin’ Since Last Saturday podcast hosted by Scott Duvall, who produces the podcast and has directed out most recent videos.
